For this project, I volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program, hosted at the Newark Senior Center.
Meals on Wheels is a nationwide network of community - based, non - profit programs dedicated to providing seniors in their communities with the support that enables them to remain living in their own homes, where they want to be. This support is typically a nutritious meal, a friendly visit and a quick safety check.
I believe that my project turned out successful. I made my clients happy and delivered the food as instructed. If I were to have done anything differently, I would have brought a Go-Pro camera with me. They strap onto my head, and they would give some first person footage, and we could hear the clients speak in the videos, as well as me. It would've provided better material for the assignment. I would've also asked for more days, but I could only do the volunteering through spring break, as the original volunteer would come back from his break. Regardless, I definitely am fine with the results of my decisions at the time, and I don't regret them.
Through this experience, I've learned that the community that I live in, tends to care for the elderly a lot more than I originally had thought. Considering that people started the Meals on Wheels program, and others volunteer for it, make it clear to me that our community does not ignore others in need. The clients don't even have to pay, as the program is non profit. It's just a good deed. I feel that I've actually made an impact, because I got good feedback from my clients, and I also filled in for someone who happened to be absent for spring break. Without my help, wow would've been less deliveries made. I also feel that I was making an impact because my employer urged me to go for more days than I had scheduled. Originally I was only supposed to go Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. However, wanted me to go for 2 more days, and I accepted.
What I learned about myself through this experience was definitely that, I was even better at talking to people than I thought I was. I knew I was okay at social interaction with strangers, but I was better than I thought. I would say it's most likely because these people were elderly. I don't think make any mistakes, or discover any flaws in what I was doing, so I can't say if I need to improve on anything. I actually liked helping the elderly and delivering things, which is something I didn't think I'd particularly like(Delivering things)!
